Top 13 Family Camping Tips

August 29th, 2010

kidsHere at Coleman Repellents,  we consider ourselves to be “experts” when it comes to family camping.  We have a lot of experience when it comes to packing the kids in the car and heading to the local campground. Over the years, we’ve learned a lot about what to do and especially what NOT to do when camping with the little ones.

Here’s a list of our  top 13:

  1. Sounds obvious, but pick a kid-friendly campsite. Look for places that have a playground, pool, beach and other fun activities for kids.
  2. Kids get bored quickly and easily…make sure you have plenty of activities planned throughout the day (e.g. nature walk, bike ride, etc.).
  3. If you’re camping with small children, stay close to home in case you get hit with bad weather or sleepless children. You can bail out if things get rough.
  4. Talk to your kids about campsite hazards like lakes, campfires, woods, etc. Establish boundaries and rules.
  5. Don’t sleep on the hard ground. Invest in a sleeping pad or inflatable mattress. Sleep is priority number one!
  6. Bring a fan to circulate air in the tent. It will also create “white noise” to drown out campground noise.
  7. Put a tarp underneath your tent for an extra layer of defense from moisture.
  8. Bring flashlights and glow sticks for nighttime safety and fun!
  9. Don’t forget the insect repellent. Nothing kills fun like bug bites. Buy a family-friendly DEET Free product like SkinSmart.
  10. Bring a first aid kit stocked with bandages and other essentials including an insect bite relief product.
  11. Have a plan for rain. Will you ride out the storm in your tent, or head into town for indoor recreation?
  12. Kids love to snack throughout the day. Be sure to pack some healthy alternatives like yogurt, cheese sticks, fruit, etc.
  13. And finally, camping with kids is anything but relaxing. Take a deep breath, relax & don’t sweat the small stuff.

OK. Now it’s your turn. What tips or advice do you have for our readers?  Leave a comment and will post a follow up list next week.

Happy camping!
